Explosion at a portable power station in South Africa

Consumers Association of South Africa has urged consumers to immediately stop using the 300wh and 500wh Gizzu power banks and return these items to their previous suppliers.

According to the agency, the power bank could catch fire during charging, threatening nearby furniture.  Syntech Distribution, which sells the power supplies in South Africa, has also voluntarily requested a recall.

According to the importer’s instructions, this product is imported from China and is sold in some of South Africa’s largest merchants Takealot, Builders Warehouse, Makro, Incredible Connection and HiFi Corp.

The device’s battery is said to be faulty and the product may spontaneously ignite and melt. A non-toxic fume may be released during the process and poses a fire hazard to nearby furniture. Probably 3,500 of this power bank have been sold in South Africa so far.

Some point out that the batteries also have the potential to explode while charging, which would be more damaging. Now some large websites in South Africa have removed this mobile power from the shelves.
